Prep. Time: 7-10mins

Cooking Time: About 15mins if pressure cooker is used to boil dal

 

Ingredients:

1 cup Toor Dal (or red lentils)
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
2 teaspoons oil
Salt to taste
2-3 small dry red chilies (or to taste)
8 Curry Leaves (see note)
1 medium onion (shallots are preferable)

1 tsp ginger paste 
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 tsp asafoetida (optional)
1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
1 large tomato

Lemon juice or tamarind paste

A pinch of sugar(optional)
2 tablespoons sambar garam masala 
1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves (also known as coriander leaves)
1 cup of a vegetable of your choice like green beans, chopped carrot, potato, corn, bottle guard, drum sticks and so on

Directions:

Wash and clean the dal. Soak couple of hour to cook it fast.

Boil tuvar daal in pressure cooker with enough water. When boiled completely, smash it.
Choose a heavy cooking pot.  

Take couple of tbsp of oil, add red whole chilis.

when oil is heated add mustard seeds. When seeds are crackled, add asafoetida and curry patta.

Add onion and ginger paste. Cook till onion is golden brown.

Add all vegetables and cook for couple of mins.

Now add all the spices

Add smashed daal and if water is needed add hot boiling water.

Boil for another 5-7 min

Garnish with coconut and fresh cilantro.

Serve hot with your favourite dish such as Dosa, Idli, Medu vada and so on
